When salesmen say that their product is 'safe and secure', they sell a dream.

Nothing is safe. Nothing is secure. Especially the cloud.

The cloud is, in fact, one of the most fragile, yet influential, technologies of our time.

No cloud service provider can promise 'safe and secure' systems because safety and security are, inherently, lofty ideals. When cloud service providers claim that their solutions are safe and secure, they are simply using a trick from the classical sales playbook—use copy that WORKS.

Arguably, in that sense, the future of the copywriter's 'safe and secure' gimmick is indeed safe and secure.

A more realistic ideal is encryption of specific information flow pathways. This ideal is definite enough to be actionable.

If any business wants to ensure that their data is safe and secure, they can take respite from the fact that it never was, never is, and never will be. That said, it is totally possible to make incremental improvements to the robustness of the system by encrypting specific pathways.
